Scale a Recipe & Check Margins with Bake Buddy

Ask Bake Buddy to scale a recipe to any yield, see the new cost and profit margin, save it as a copy, or get ingredient-substitution ideas — all in chat.

Scaling in plain English

Open Bake Buddy and just ask — for example:

Scale Red Velvet to 50

Bake Buddy returns the fully scaled ingredient list plus the new total cost, revenue, and profit margin. It's a preview only — your original recipe isn't changed.

Mind the unit

The target is in the recipe's own yield unit. If a recipe is measured in servings, "scale to 50" means 50 servings. If it's measured in grams, "scale to 5000" means 5000 grams. Bake Buddy always tells you the unit it used, so you can check at a glance.

Saving a scaled copy

Happy with the scaled version? Ask Bake Buddy to save it as a new recipe (e.g. "save Red Velvet scaled to 50"). It creates a copy at the new size and leaves your original untouched. Because this actually writes a recipe, Bake Buddy asks you to confirm first, and you'll need recipe-edit permission.

Ingredient substitution ideas

Ask things like "suggest cheaper ingredients for Red Velvet" or "make this dairy-free". Bake Buddy suggests practical swaps with a cost hint.

Allergen safety. Any suggested swap that changes the allergen profile is always flagged for you to confirm. Bake Buddy never treats an allergen-affecting substitution as automatically safe — the final call is always yours. Substitution suggestions are ideas only; they never change your recipe.

A quick note on margins

Scaling a recipe up or down doesn't change its profit margin — the cost and the price grow together — so Bake Buddy simply shows you the margin so you can see it clearly at the new size. The place margins really move is when you substitute ingredients, which is exactly what the substitution tool helps you weigh up.

Recipe scaling and substitution ideas are available on the Growth plan and above.
