Use one recipe as an ingredient of another — e.g. a sourdough leaven or a buttercream made as its own recipe — so cost and stock flow through correctly.
Sub-Recipes (a recipe inside a recipe)
A sub-recipe lets you use one recipe as an ingredient of another. Make a component once — a sourdough leaven, a pastry cream, a buttercream, a laminated dough — then add it as a line inside the recipes that use it. Cost and stock flow through automatically.
Add a sub-recipe to a recipe
- Open or create a recipe and go to the Recipe Formula (per batch) card.
- Click Add Sub-Recipe. (It appears once you have at least one other recipe to use.)
- Each formula row has a type selector — Ingredient or Sub-recipe. On a sub-recipe row, choose the recipe from the list.
- Enter the amount. The unit is the sub-recipe’s own yield unit (shown locked next to the amount), so there is no unit to pick.
Example
You make Leaven as its own recipe (yield 1000 g of flour and water). In your Sourdough Bread recipe you add Leaven as a sub-recipe and enter 500 (g).
- Cost: BakeOnyx costs it as (500 ÷ 1000) × the Leaven’s cost.
- Stock & buying: the flour and water inside the Leaven appear on your shopping list and prep list as raw ingredients — scaled to how much bread you are making.
Cost cascade
When a sub-recipe’s cost changes — say flour goes up — every parent recipe that uses it, and any product linked to those parents, recalculates automatically. You never re-cost by hand.
Stock and purchasing
Prep lists and shopping lists expand sub-recipes down to their raw ingredients. So the flour inside your Leaven shows up in what you need to buy and in your shortfalls — you don’t have to track the intermediate yourself.
No loops
A recipe cannot reference itself, and BakeOnyx blocks circular references (A uses B, and B uses A) when you save.
Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I pick a unit for a sub-recipe row?
The amount is always in the sub-recipe’s own yield unit, so it is locked to that unit.
The Add Sub-Recipe button is missing.
You need at least one other recipe in your bakery first — a recipe can’t use itself.
Do I need a special plan?
No — sub-recipes work on every plan.
